Supporting your gut, your mind and your long-term success

Gut-Directed Hypnosis & GLP-1 Medication

Starting GLP-1 medication is a transformative step for your metabolic wellness, but navigating changes can sometimes challenge your digestive system. Gut-directed clinical hypnotherapy acts as a gentle, scientifically-backed partner to your medical treatment—soothing side effects, reducing anxiety, and establishing the profound brain-gut connection needed for lasting comfort and lifestyle success.

What is the gut–brain connection?

Your gut and brain are in constant communication via a bidirectional highway known as the gut-brain axis. Through millions of nerves—predominantly the vagus nerve—and vital neurotransmitters generated by your gut microbiome, stress and emotional signals flow directly into your digestive system. This delicate balance means anxiety can directly trigger physical discomfort. Modern clinical hypnotherapy helps gently ease these signals, soothing the overactive nervous system to resolve symptoms where they start.

What is gut-directed hypnosis?

Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a highly effective, scientifically validated therapeutic approach that targets the miscommunication between your brain and your gut. Rather than focusing purely on dietary restrictions, this gentle method uses clinical hypnosis to calm the overactive signals in your nervous system, relieving symptoms of IBS, chronic bloating, and digestive discomfort.

Backed by decades of clinical research—including landmark trials showing a 70% success rate in reducing symptom severity—gut-directed hypnosis empowers you to regain control over your gut health. By entering a deeply relaxed state, we guide your mind to modulate visceral sensitivity, quiet gut spasms, and restore natural digestive harmony.

Gut-Directed Hypnosis & GLP-1 Medication

Supporting your gut, your mind and your long-term success

Starting a GLP-1 medication goes beyond just impacting your appetite. For many women, it changes the way they experience food, eating and mealtimes. It might make some people more aware of behaviours or symptoms which previously they had not noticed. Whilst on the medication some develop nausea, constipation or bloating. Others become anxious about eating because they are unsure how to eat, what they need to eat or worry every meal will make them feel unwell. Some discover that years of dieting have left them disconnected from hunger, fullness and enjoyment of food. This is where supporting the gut–brain connection may become an important part of your journey. As a Registered Dietitian with a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Hypnosis, I combine evidence-based nutrition with techniques that help support both the digestive system and the nervous system.

What is the gut–brain connection?

Your digestive system and your brain are constantly communicating. This two-way communication network, also known as the gut–brain axis, helps regulate: Appetite, Digestion, Fullness, Nausea, Stress responses, Bowel function, Food enjoyment. There is also emerging evidence to show that the gut could also impact our mental health and conditions such as anxiety, stress and depression. GLP-1 medications intentionally alter some of these signals to help reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness.

What is gut-directed hypnosis?

Gut-directed hypnosis is a structured, evidence-based therapeutic approach that has been studied most extensively in people with IBS and disorders of gut–brain interaction. Unlike stage hypnosis, clinical hypnosis is a collaborative process in which you remain aware and in control throughout. Sessions typically involve guided relaxation and focused attention designed to help reduce gut sensitivity, calm the nervous system and support healthier communication between the brain and digestive tract. Research has shown that gut-directed hypnotherapy can improve symptoms and quality of life for many people with IBS. While it has not been established as a treatment for GLP-1 side effects specifically, some of its principles may be helpful for women whose symptoms are influenced by the gut–brain connection or who find digestive symptoms are creating fear or stress around eating.

How might this support women taking GLP-1 medication?

Combining gut-directed clinical hypnosis with tailored nutrition support offers a gentle, science-backed approach to managing the physical and emotional changes of GLP-1 therapy.

Anxiety around eating

Perhaps you've started avoiding meals because you're worried about feeling nauseous afterwards. Learning to reduce anticipatory anxiety may help you feel more confident approaching food again.

Stress and digestive symptoms

Stress can influence how the digestive system functions and how symptoms are experienced. Supporting nervous system regulation may help reduce the impact of stress on digestion.

IBS alongside GLP-1 medication

Many women already live with IBS before starting GLP-1 medication. If you have an existing disorder of gut–brain interaction, gut-directed hypnosis may be considered as part of your wider IBS management plan especially when low FODMAP diets are not recommended.

Building healthier habits

Clinical hypnosis can also be used to support behaviour change by reinforcing consistent routines and helping you implement the nutrition and lifestyle strategies we develop together. It isn't a substitute for those strategies, but it can complement them.

Reconnecting with your body

After years of dieting, many women describe feeling disconnected from your body's hunger and fullness signals. The combination of nutrition education and guided hypnosis may help develop greater awareness of hunger, fullness and eating experiences, although this will vary from person to person.

What happens during a session?

If we decide that gut-directed hypnosis is appropriate for you, it will always be part of a broader nutrition plan. Sessions are tailored to your goals and may include:

You remain awake, aware and in control throughout. Many people simply describe it as deeply relaxing.

Clinical Foundations & Care

Gut-Brain Connection

Is there evidence?

Gut-directed hypnotherapy has a well-established evidence base for improving symptoms and quality of life in many people with IBS and other disorders of gut–brain interaction.

Research into hypnosis specifically for women taking GLP-1 medications is currently limited, so I don't present it as a treatment for medication side effects. Instead, I use it selectively where it aligns with your individual needs.

My Philosophy

Nutrition is rarely just about food. It’s a combination of biology, behaviour, emotions, habits, stress, culture and the relationship between your brain and your gut.

For some women, improving digestion starts with protein and hydration. For others, calming the nervous system is an equally important piece of the puzzle.

The goal is always the same: helping you feel healthier, more confident and better equipped to make the most of your GLP-1 journey and enable you to reach your goals whilst feeling good in your own skin.
